88+ Years

St. Mary’s Mission Hospital Mumias stands as a beacon of hope and healing, with a rich history that spans an impressive 88 years. Founded in 1932 by the Ursuline Sisters of Bergen, the hospital emerged as part of their missionary endeavors in the heart of Mumias. These devoted sisters laid the foundation for what would become a pillar of healthcare in the region, initially operating from modest facilities that expanded to semi-permanent structures in the 1940s.
The hospital's evolution took a significant leap forward in 1960 with the construction of its first permanent building, which continues to serve as the Administration Block—a testament to its enduring legacy. In 1971, the institution welcomed its first appointed medical doctor, marking a pivotal moment in its journey toward providing professional and advanced medical care to the community. In 1983, after decades of dedicated service, the last of the Ursuline Sisters returned to the Netherlands, entrusting the stewardship of this vital healthcare institution to the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega. Under their guidance, St. Mary’s Mission Hospital Mumias has grown to embody the values of compassion, excellence, and patient-centered care, becoming a cornerstone of health services in the region and beyond. Its storied past not only reflects its commitment to serving the community but also inspires its ongoing mission to deliver quality healthcare with a touch of humanity.
